ALTA VERSILIA & GARFAGNANA
The landscape is the absolute protagonist
Alta Versilia and Garfagnana
In the province of Lucca, one of the most remote yet fascinating areas from a tourist perspective is the Garfagnana. Nestled between the Apuan Alps and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, this beautiful natural setting features valleys and peaks that rise above 2,000 meters. Garfagnana is an ideal destination for a holiday off the beaten path: exploring the villages and hamlets will make you realize you’ve arrived in a truly splendid region, offering countless opportunities for relaxation, while hiking enthusiasts will find a variety of trails ready to be explored.
Don’t miss Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, the largest of the 15 municipalities in the area, with its beautiful Rocca Ariostesca, recently restored. Also worth visiting is the village of San Pellegrino in Alpe, from where you can start the Giro del Diavolo, a famous trail for hiking or mountain biking that offers breathtaking views. Among the many villages in Garfagnana, Sassi, Barga, Sillico, Vergemoli, and Ceserana are must-see spots.
When it comes to excursions in Garfagnana, we recommend visiting Campocatino, the Orecchiella Park, Lake Gramolazzo, and especially Isola Santa, a village situated on an artificial lake, near which you’ll find Michelangelo’s white marble quarries and the unique rock formations known as the Marmitte dei Giganti. If you’re more inclined to explore underground, enjoy the subterranean adventure to the Grotta del Vento in Fornovolasco, or visit Corchia Park in Levigliani, where you can explore the Antro del Corchia, Italy’s largest cave; the Cava del Piastraio, with its grand marble-carved halls; the mercury mines; Levigliani’s museum system; and enjoy trekking through the magnificent landscapes of the Apuan Alps.
